Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, the 14th of September met Stefan Pehringer, the ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria arrived in acquaintance visit.
The Chief Justice approved previous cooperation with the Supreme Court of Austria and other court institutions. Several delegations of Austrian judges visited Latvia and the Supreme Court. Irmgard Griss, the President of the Supreme Court of Austria and the President of the Network of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union participated and reported at the conference dedicated to judicature of the Supreme Court in 2010. Judges from Latvia also visited Austria several times exchanging experience and training in the Supreme Administrative Court of Austria in framework of judicial continuing education and exchange programme.
The Ambassador of Austria approved previous cooperation and promised to support cooperation between courts of Latvia and Austria.
Visiting the Supreme Court was interesting for Stefan Pehringer also in professional sense as he studied in the Faculty of Law of Vienna University. In 2004 he received his degree of Doctor of Law. Conversation with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was also about court system of Latvia and Austria. Long terms of review and influence of economical breakdown to court work are topical issues in both countries, just as issues on court independence. The Ambassador also got acquainted with history of Latvia, visiting the museum of the Supreme Court.
Stefan Pehringer was accredited for the post of the Ambassador on the 16th of August. He has worked in Foreign Service of Austria since 1995. He worked in different posts in Foreign Office and in embassies of his state in Berlin and Copenhagen. Latvia is the first state, in which he will work as the ambassador.
