In order to promote schoolchildren's understanding of court work, the Supreme Court has published three short animated videos titles “Why do we need courts?”, “Types of court cases” and “Judge”.
The videos feature vivid visualizations and concise narration that make the learning experience both entertaining and informative, allowing complex issues to be explained in comprehensible way. Video materials can also be relevant for secondary school students, university students and adults.
The first video "Why do we need courts?" explains why the laws must be observed and what such observance brings to the society, as well as what is court’s role in the country and in the life of each person.
The second video "Types of court cases" provides an overview of the four types of cases in court and how they differ, as well as it explains Latvia's three-level court system.
The film "Judge" focuses on the duties of a judge and the criteria that must be met in order to become a judge.
The Supreme Court has already shown these films at the Museum Night and at the LAMPA Conversation Festival. The animations are also published on the Supreme Court's YouTube channel, making them available to the general public. Closed captions in English are also added to videos. In this way, the Supreme Court aims to reach a diverse audience and take legal education outside the classroom.
For each video, a set of worksheets for the use of primary and elementary school students shall be developed in addition. Methodological comments for teachers will be created for each page. On August 21, the Supreme Court will hold an informative event, inviting teachers of social studies and form teachers to present them the prepared materials and to discuss the use of these materials in the classroom.
The content of the videos was created by the working group of the Supreme Court, which included Veronika Krūmiņa, the chair of the Department of Administrative Cases, Kristīne Zemīte, Inga Bērtaite-Pudāne, Santa Ozola, Elīna Grigore-Bāra, legal research counsels, Monta Krone, the senator’s assistant, Zane Mičule, the project manager, and Baiba Kataja, the press secretary. The working group was advised by Madara Lāce, the author of teaching materials of the educational company "Lielvārds".
The videos were created by the creative agency "3000 Studio".
