The Supreme Court is aware of its special role – to be the strongest guarantor of justice in the country – acknowledged the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Ivars Bičkovičs, during the visit of the State President Raimonds Vējonis.

The Supreme Court will be able to fulfil its mission only if it is recognized by every person working at the court – judges and employees in their day-to-day work. Therefore, as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court has pointed out, it is symbolically significant that, during the visit on October 23, the State President met not only with the leadership of the Supreme Court, but also with the entire court team.

By addressing judges and employees, the President emphasized that the Supreme Court should inspire other courts and the entire legal community. "You must strengthen the rule of law in our country by your work and being a good example”, said the President, emphasizing that a strong Supreme Court is a solid foundation of the judicial system and the security of Latvia.

The State President pointed out the problems regarding the court work, which raise legitimate questions of the society – regarding the large number of appealed and annulled rulings, which probably indicates the lack of competence of judges of the lower courts, the prestige of the judge's profession, the continuous professional development of judges, as well as making clear court rulings to the public.

In turn, the chairpersons of the departments of the Supreme Court pointed out issues of courts from the judicial point of view, emphasizing the need to improve the quality of the law. The frequent amendments to the law and the obscurity of legal provisions, rather than the lack of competence of judges, is the issue in work of lower courts. The Supreme Court also drew attention to the unacceptable practice of creating exceptions in the three-tiered court system – imposing duties on the Supreme Court that are uncharacteristic to cassation court, and also emphasized the importance of professional court staff and employees' remuneration issues. The chairpersons also spoke about the importance of educating the society and the evils of non-constructive criticism of courts.

The Supreme Court also introduced the President with the role, systematization and accessibility of case law, with the international activities of the Court, as well as plans for the centenary anniversary of the Senate of Latvia.
