On July 12, the Kazakhstan judicial system delegation headed by the judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the chairman of the Republican Public Association "Union of Judges of the Republic of Kazakhstan" Saken Abdolla, visited the Supreme Court of Latvia on an experience exchange visit. Representatives of the Judicial Administration of the Republic of Kazakhstan and Bostandyk District Court also participated.
The delegation was welcomed by Anita Kovaļevska, the senator of the Department of Administrative Cases, and Alla Spale, the head of the Secretariat of the Judicial Council. Anita Kovaļevska introduced the delegation to the work and competences of the Supreme Court, the procedure and peculiarities for examining cases in the cassation instance. Foreign colleagues were especially interested in the review procedure of cassation complaints. Alla Spale spoke about the work of the Judicial Council, focusing on the issue of particular interest to the delegation – the guarantees of the independence of judges and the judiciary established by law. Issues such as the nomination and confirmation in the office of judges and court presidents, the procedure for establishing the composition of the Judicial Council, the creation, compilation and application of unform case-law were also discussed.
At the conclusion of the visit, the delegation walked the corridors of the Palace of Justice, visiting the historic Senate Courtroom and gaining an insight into the stages of development of the judicial system in the Supreme Court Museum.
The Kazakhstan delegation arrived to Latvia with the aim of getting acquainted with the operation, development and reforms of the Latvian judicial system, as judicial system reforms are currently being implemented in Kazakhstan. As part of their visit to the Baltic States, representatives of Kazakhstan judicial system also visited the judicial institutions in Lithuania and Estonia.
