On 7 November, the Judicial Qualification Committee elected Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, to the office of the Chair of the Committee and Maris Vigants, the Chair of the Administrative regional court – to the office of the deputy Chair of the Committee.
The Chair of the Judicial Qualification Committee had to be re-elected, as on 31 October, due to achievement of maximum age for holding of an office of a judge judicial powers of former Chair of the Committee – Gunars Aigars, the Chair of the chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court, expired. The deputy Chair of the Committee had to be re-elected, when former deputy Chair Ervins Kuskis was elected as a new Chair of the Committee.
In the future, civil judges of the Supreme Court in their turn will be represented by Aivars Keiss, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, who was elected to the Judicial Qualification Committee in extramural Latvian judges’ conference in electronic elections on 12 September.
The Judicial Qualification Committee is institution of judicial self-government, which performs assessment of professional activity of judges. The Judicial Qualification Committee is elected in secret ballot by Judges’ Conference, but the Chair of the Committee and his or her deputy are elected by the Judicial Qualification Committee from among its members.
