Today, June 16, the Saeima (parliament) confirmed Jautrīte Briede, Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases as a judge of the Constitutional Court. 82 deputies voted for this decision, 3 deputies voted against, no one abstained.
Jautrīte Briede will commence her duties at the Constitutional Court on September 1.
Jautrīte Briede has been a senator in the Department of Administrative Cases since 2004. She is a doctor of law, professor at the Department of State Law Sciences of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. She is one of the founders of administrative law in Latvia, author and co-author of two monographs, a commentary on the Constitution and a commentary on the Administrative Procedure Law, as well as several scientific publications.
Jautrīte Briede was nominated for the position of judge of the Constitutional Court upon the proposal of Saeima deputies. Her candidacy was recognized as suitable by the Judicial Council.
There are seven judges in the Constitutional Court, and according to the Constitutional Court Law, the judges are approved by the Saeima. Three judges of the Constitutional Court are approved upon the proposal of no less than ten members of the Saeima, two – upon the proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers, and two more – upon the proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.
The term of office of a judge of the Constitutional Court is ten years.
