In early May, the performers of legal research at the Supreme Court of Latvia got acquainted with the justice system and work of research institutes in Canada.
Courts of different instances were visited: the Supreme Court of Canada, the Quebec Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Appeal and the Court of Appeal in Toronto. Researchers were interested mainly in the legal research work of courts and publication of court rulings.
There were also meetings held with representatives of judges’ continuing education organizations, centers for studies of law at universities, representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as visit to Great Library of the Law Society of Upper Canada. Currently research and library support is highly appreciated as it provides continuity of case-law.
The Supreme Court delegation was composed of Head of the Division of Case-law and Research Anita Zikmane, Legal Research Counsels to the Division of Case-law and Research Reinis Markvarts and Aleksandrs Potaicuks, and Legal Research Counsels to Departments of Criminal Cases and Civil Cases Nora Magone and Liva Dreimane.
The visit was organized within the framework of the European Social Fund project "Justice for Development".
