On 1 July, in Strasbourg, the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights heard the case “Jeronovics v. Latvia”. Jautrite Briede, the judge of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, discharged duties of ad hoc judge in this case.
Ad hocjudge participates in review of the case in the European Court of Human Rights, if permanent judge from the Contracting Party is unable to participate in review of the case. In accordance with the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, ad hoc judge is chosen by the President of the European Court of Human Rights from a list submitted in advance by the Contracting Party.
On 1 December 2009, the Section of the European Court of Human Rights announced its judgement in the case “Jeronovics v. Latvia", holding that there had been violation of Article 3 (prohibition of torture) of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. After appeal against decision of the Section, the case was referred for examination to the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.
