The aim of the meeting that was held of February 23, between the President of the state Valdis Zatlers and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics, was to discuss results of work of the Supreme Court in 2009 and priorities for this year. Traditionally, such meetings take place every year.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court informed the President about indices of work of the Supreme Court in 2009. number of cases received in the court still increases – last year 4579 cases came to the Supreme Court for review. Although number of cases reviewed has increased, the rest of cases by the end of the year had been as big as never before – 2468 cases. The Chief Justice again stressed that during economic breakdown number of civil cases in courts increases significantly.

The President expressed understanding about great work load of judges of the Supreme Court, taking into account that, while number of cases was increasing, the number of judges decreased. Last year work in the Supreme Court was left by four judges of retirement age, this year – two more judges, but no new judge started work in the Supreme Court in 2009.

The President called to find solutions in order to decrease terms of review of cases and listened to information provided by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court about organisation of work in conditions of decreased budget.

Other topics of conversation were formation of the Board of Justice planned, its role in development of judicial system, and other topical themes related to courts.
