The Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia is implementing the project “Strengthening Judicial Practice through Latvian–Nordic Supreme Court Study Visits on Effective and Fair Trials in Criminal Cases”. The project is funded by the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia and the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Public Administration.
Two study visits will take place within the project:

September 2026 – to the Supreme Court of Sweden and the Svea Court of Appeal;

October 2026 – to the Supreme Court of Iceland and the Directorate of Public Prosecutions of Iceland.
The project involves judges of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court. During the visits, the participants will discuss the initiation of cassation proceedings, the scope of review, the decision-making process, the reasoning for refusing cassation proceedings, the handling of complex cases, and work organisation.
The aim of the project is to promote professional experience exchange on cassation proceedings in criminal cases by comparing the practical experience of the Supreme Courts of Latvia, Sweden and Iceland. Such discussions enable judges and court staff to better understand common challenges, become acquainted with different working approaches, and continue improving the organisation of the court’s work.
