On November 1, the Supreme Court (Senate) senators met in a conference format to discuss topical issues related to the development of the cassation instance. In recent years, the Senate has already analysed certain aspects of the effectiveness of the cassation instance, this time focusing on issues such as the conceptualisation of the Senate's findings, the Senate's ability to conclude proceedings by amending a decision of an appellate court, and certain aspects of the reasoning of Senate’s rulings.
Aigars Strupišs, President of the Supreme Court, analysed the handling of cases in the Senate, paying particular attention to respecting the limits of cassation proceedings while also thinking strategically about the effectiveness of court proceedings. The Chairs of Senate’s Departments Anita Poļakova, Normunds Salenieks and Anita Kovaļevska outlined the current developments in the Departments.
Laila Medina, Advocate General of the Court of Justice of the European Union, who was specifically invited to participate in the conference, explained and assessed the working processes of the Court of Justice of the European Union in terms of case preparation, reasoning of rulings and the creation and development of case-law concepts.
The final part of the conference featured a discussion among the senators.
