Having completed a 10-year term as a Judge of the Constitutional Court, Senator Aldis Laviņš returns to the Supreme Court. As before, he will be a Senator of the Senate’s Department of Civil Cases.
On April 3, 2014, the Saeima (parliament) elected Aldis Laviņš as a Judge of the Constitutional Court upon a proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, and he assumed this office on April 25, 2014.
During his term of office as the Judge of the Constitutional Court, Aldis Laviņš was elected President of the Constitutional Court twice (from May 6, 2014 to May 7, 2017 and from May 10, 2022 to August 16, 2024).
The Constitutional Court is composed of seven judges, who are confirmed in office by the Saeima. Three judges are appointed upon a proposal of no less than ten members of the Saeima, two judges – upon a proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers, and another two – upon a proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. The Plenary Session of the Supreme Court selects the candidates for the office of a Constitutional Court judge from among the Supreme Court judges.
The term of office of a judge of the Constitutional Court is 10 years.
