1 May, 2024
On May 1, in order to mark the 20th anniversary of Latvia's accession to the European Union, a solemn ceremony of the Guard of Honour and raising of the EU flag took place at the Riga Castle, in the presence of Edgars Rinkēvičs, the President of Latvia, Evika Siliņa, the Prime Minister, Baiba Braže, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Aigars Strupišs, the President of the Supreme Court.
20 years ago, on May 1, 2004, Latvia became a member state of the European Union. It was a Latvia's return to the European family of democratic countries governed by the rule of law, and thus the Latvian judicial system also returned to the European legal space.
The principle of the rule of law is one of the values of the European Union. An independent and qualified judicial system was one of the prerequisites for Latvia to become a member state of the European Union, and it serves as a guarantee of Latvia as a democratic EU member state governed by the rule of law in today's Europe.
