The Board of Justice calls the Judicial Conference on the 25th of November.
Judicial Qualifications Committee and Commission of Judicial Ethics will present reports. However, elections of representatives of several institutions of judicial self-government are planned.
Judges will have to elect the Chair of Judicial Disciplinary Committee, as Pavels Gruzins, who was elected for this post, terminated execution of duties of the judge. According to the Law on Disciplinary Responsibility of Judges, the Chair of Judicial Disciplinary Committee is the deputy of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who is being elected in closed vote by the Judicial Conference.
One member of Judicial Qualifications Committee is also to be elected at the Judicial Conference from judges of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, as Inguna Radzevica, who was elected for this post, is appointed for the post of the senator in the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court. Representation of courts has been established in the law “On Judicial Power” providing that it must include one judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases.
In the second part of the conference, the work will be organised in three sections; topical issues of case-law in field of civil, criminal and administrative law. This part of the conference is organised by the Supreme Court and the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia. Representatives of the bar, prosecutor’s office and notary’s office are also invited to attend this part of the conference.
The Judicial Conference is judicial self-governmental institution. Judges of the Supreme Court, judges of regional courts, judges of district (city) courts and judges of land-book departments participate in the conference with the vote. The Conference is called by the Board of Justice at least once a year.
