Documentary “Senators” can be viewed on the webpage of the Supreme Court

A documentary film “Senators” from now on can be viewed in the history section of the website of the Supreme Court. The film is created as a tribute to the centenary of the Senate of Latvia. With the premiere of the film, the Supreme Court launched the centenary year of the Senate of Latvia. In 2018 the film was viewed by dozens of Court guests and judges in regions of Latvia; the film was demonstrated at events of the judicial system and translated into English for foreign guests. The film was also viewed by townsman of senators in several municipalities.

A book dedicated to the work of the Office of Senate’s rulings is published

The Courthouse Agency has issued a book “Office of Senate’s rulings. Conclusions of the Senate of Latvia on the application of the provisions of the Civil Law (1938-1940)”. The book is dedicated to the Office of Senate’s rulings established in the Senate of Latvia in 1938, the establishment of which initiated the research and compilation of the case-law in Latvia.

Judge Valters Pokis shall execute judicial duties at the Department of Administrative Cases

On January 7, the judge of the Administrative Regional Court, Valters Pokis, begins to perform the duties of the judge at the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court. By decision of 10 December, the Council for the Judiciary instructed Valters Pokis to replace the Supreme Court judge during temporary absence.

The Chancery and the Document Administration Division have been merged

In order to improve the organization, efficiency and quality of court work, the Administration of the Supreme Court is reorganized as of January 1, 2019 by adding the Document Administration Division to the Chancery of the Supreme Court. From now on, circulation of all documents – judicial and other correspondence – will be provided by a single unit – the Chancery.

On Thursday, December 20, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics accepted the oath of twelve advocates admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court emphasizes the importance of independence of national judge in ensuring protection of human rights

On 14 December, Ivars Bickovics, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, participated in an international conference in Kiev on the role of the Supreme Courts in ensuring the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms. The Supreme Court of Ukraine organized the conference to review and evaluate the changes introduced in the work of the new Supreme Court of Ukraine in the first year after the radical reform of the judicial system, including the reform of the Supreme Court.

New judge and two acting judges appointed to the Department of Administrative Cases

Judge of the Regional Administrative Court Anita Kovalevska was appointed to the position of a judge of the Supreme Court by a decision of the Council for the Judiciary of December 10. The judge had applied for the position of a judge of the Department of Administrative Cases.
