On Friday, January 19, the Supreme Court will convene the Plenary Session, during which senators will evaluate the performance of the Supreme Court in the past year.

The performance of Supreme Court (Senate) Departments will be analyzed by their heads – Normunds Salenieks, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases, Anita Poļakova, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases, and Veronika Krūmiņa, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases.

The report on the work of the Disciplinary Court will be given by its chair Normunds Salenieks.

In conclusion of the Plenary Session, a summary of the work of the Supreme Court in 2023 and objectives for the 2024 will be given by Aigars Strupišs, the President of the Supreme Court.

Juris Stukāns, the Prosecutor General, and Inese Lībiņa-Egnere, the Minister of Justice, are also invited to participate and to address the Plenary Session.

In the second part of the Plenary Session, there will be a discussion on the criteria for the application of Section 49.1, Paragraph two of the law “On Judicial Power”. This provision of the law provides for the authority of the General Meeting of Senators of a Senate’s Department in discussing topical issues of interpretation of legal provisions in order to ensure uniformity in the application of legal provisions.

The first part of the Plenary Session will be livestreamed on the YouTube channel of the Supreme Court. The link will be available on the website and Twitter account of the Supreme Court prior to start of the Plenary Session.
