Kalvis Torgans, the senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court, the professor of the Department of Civil Law of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia (UL) received annual award of the University of Latvia in science. The award is given to the professor for creation of the scientific school.

Scientific school is a symbolic concept or title that defines totality of achievements of the scientist meaning that he is a leader in concrete direction and he has got many disciples and students.

While nominating the professor Kalvis Torgans for the award of the UL, it was mentioned that he is high-level scientist in field of Latvian civil law; his scientific interests are entrepreneurship, comparative law, protection of consumer rights. Results of studies made by Kalvis Torgans were used in procedure of preparation of more than 60 legislative documents. The professor wrote 14 books and was adviser of fifteen Doctor Theses. It was also evaluated that Kalvis Torgans has actively worked both in academic and practical proceedings, being the senator in the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate of the Supreme Court.

Annual award of the UL for achievements in science has been given once a year in three subcategories: for best Doctor Thesis, for scientific achievements and for creation of scientific school.
