On Thursday, April 3, the Saeima (the Parliament) confirmed Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Supreme Court Department of Civil Cases, in the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court.
75 parliamentarians voted for candidacy of Aldis Lavins, one voted against and four members of the Parliament refrained from voting.
Candidacy of Aldis Lavins was nominated by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, as in this March term of office of Aija Branta, who was confirmed in the office by the Saeima in 2004 upon recommendation of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, expired.
The Press Service of the Saeima informs that Aldis Lavins shall enter the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court on April 25, this year. His term of office is ten years.
There are seven judges in the Constitutional Court, and in accordance with the Constitutional Court Law judges shall be confirmed in the office by the Saeima. Three judges of the Constitutional Court are confirmed upon recommendation of no less than ten parliamentarians, two judges – upon recommendation of the Cabinet of Ministers and one judge – upon recommendation of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.
