15 September, 2014
On 15 September, the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court elected Aigars Strupiss, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases, to the office of the member of the Disciplinary Court.
Aigars Strupiss was elected to the office of a judge and began work in the Supreme Court only this year, namely, in 2014. However, the Department of Civil Cases unanimously nominated his candidature to the office of a member of the Disciplinary Court and he agreed to this responsibility, as he himself reasoned – the fact that he is a newcomer in a court system, may not cause doubts about possible partiality.
The member of the Disciplinary Court had to be elected from the Department of Civil Cases, because one judge from the previous composition – Aldis Lavins – was elected to the office of the Chair of the Constitutional Court. In accordance with the Law on Disciplinary Liability of Judges the Disciplinary Court consists of six judges of departments of the Supreme Court – by twos from the Department of Civil Cases, the Department of Criminal Cases and the Department of Administrative Cases, elected by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court for five years.
