On 27 and 28 March, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics visits Luxembourg and participates in the meeting of the presidents of Supreme Courts which is organized by the European Court of Justice on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.

Purpose of the meeting is to promote the cooperation among the courts of the European Union Member States and judicial cooperation with the European Court of Justice. This is an important element of the quality of rule of law – as indicated by the President of the European Court of Justice Koen Lenaerts.

Meeting will be held in three sessions – on the European Union Member States' judicial information network, on the cooperation of national courts with the European Court of Justice, as well as on accessibility to judicial decisions and protection of personal data. The closing session would be “The 60th Anniversary of the signature of the Treaties of Rome: from a Europe of markets to a Europe of citizens”.

Participants of the meeting will also be able to attend and observe the conduct of hearing at the European Court of Justice.

After the Second World War six countries signed the Treaty of Rome, which provided for formation of economic union and laid the foundation for the European Union. After 60 years in Rome 27 European Union leaders signed a Rome Declaration, pledging to make the union stronger and more flexible, as well as to achieve greater unity among Member States.
