The President Valdis Zatlers invited Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court to meet on the 18th of January to discuss main work tasks and priorities for the current year.
The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court informed the president about results of work of the Supreme Court for the last year and the most significant events in the court in 2010.
The statistical data shows that number of cases received in the Supreme Court increases continuously. Almost 5000 cases were received in the Supreme Court last year. Number of cases reviewed also grows – the Supreme Court reviewed 4520 cases in 2010. However, there is one accruing problem – the number of cases pending and increasing terms of review of cases.
The President was interested in reasons of delay in review of cases. Most often it happens due to illness of accused or their representatives. Being a former doctor, the President admitted that check of sick-list issue validity is a process difficult to control, but the decision is to be found.
As the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court informed, 2011 began for the court with more intensive work, as six new judges started to work in the court. There is a hope that it will allow to decrease number of cases pending significantly.
The Board of Justice that was created last year was the second topic of the conversation. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who is the Chair of the Board of Justice at the same time, informed the President about the beginning of activity of the Board and first conclusions.
Meeting of President and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is annual tradition to get immediate information about topical events of the Supreme Court and judicial system in general.
