On July 29, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court accepted a vow of four bailiffs. Marcis Midegs and Elina Balasanjana became sworn bailiffs of Riga regional court, Maris Vanags will be sworn bailiff of Vidzeme regional court and Agnese Celherte – sworn bailiff of Zemgale regional court.
Having accepted a vow, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, wished to new bailiffs to be aware of joint responsibility of fair trial and not to be the weakest stage in litigation system. “If a judgement has not been enforced, work of all other stages of proceedings will become senseless. Moreover, a bailiff is not the last, but the most important links of this chain, because the society will consider, if there is sense to look for justice in a court at all, watching at bailiff’s ability to enforce court judgement not only in accordance with the letter of law, but also with spirit of the law,” the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court said.
Sworn bailiffs have been individuals associated with court system, who work at regional courts and discharge duties established in laws. In accordance with Section 29 of the Law on Bailiffs, a bailiff shall be included in the list of sworn bailiffs and may start discharge vocational duties, only after having insured risk of professional activity and having given a vow to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
