Supreme Court President participates in the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the EU colloquium on cooperation of national and international courts

This week, on November 13 and 14, the President of the Supreme Court, Aigars Strupišs, participates in the events of the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union in The Hague – a meeting with members of The Hague Judicial Club, Network’s colloquium and the General Assembly.
The meeting, at which the keynote speeches will also be given by the President of the International Court of Justice, Yuji Iwasawa, the President of the International Criminal Court, Tomoko Akane, and the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Mattias Guyomar, the contribution of national and international courts to ensuring the rule of law is to be addressed.
This year's colloquium will include two working sessions. The theme of the first session will be national courts and international crimes. Serious international crimes, in particular genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, remain on the agenda of international courts. The fight against impunity for international crimes is a shared responsibility and requires cooperation between national authorities and international courts. Participants will discuss the role of national jurisdiction in the fight against impunity of persons suspected of committing international crimes. The second session will focus on social media – its impact on court communication and influence on judicial independence.
At the General Assembly, participants will elect the members of the Board and the President of the Network of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union.
The Network of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union aims to promote the exchange of views and experiences among the presidents of national supreme courts on national judicial practices, the work organization and functions of supreme courts. The Network brings together the presidents of the supreme courts of 35 countries. The General Assembly of members meets once every two years.
