On February 17, during the Day of shadows, seven pupils of secondary schools got acquainted with work of judges and employees of the Supreme Court. “Shadows” got opportunity to participate in real court session of the Chamber of Criminal Cases in the case about contraband of oil, in which there are ten accused persons, to see the historical hall of the Senate and the museum of the Supreme Court.

Pupils of Riga Secondary School Nr. 3 Raimonds Freibergs and Emils Roze got acquainted with everyday work of the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate Arturs Freibergs. Raimonds and Emils didn’t know that so many cases have been reviewed in written proceedings and not in court hearings. They think that it would be interesting to work as a judge just for a short time, but it might be boring to do it during lifetime. Pupils found museum of the Supreme Court, located in the bomb-shelter, to be interesting.

Discharger of duties of the judge of Chamber of Civil Cases Maris Vigants had four “shadows”. Santa Pavlovica and Santa Musina from Secondary school of his native town Madona and Lilita Zelca and Laura Laudina from the secondary school Nr. 1 in Dobele said that they had seen more than they had expected during their visit to the Supreme Court. They were interested in participating in court session and suddenly to come to the historical hall of the Senate, in which government sessions take place now. But, having acquainted with the work of the judge Vigants, girls understood that it is necessary to study hard, in order to become a judge, and how much it is necessary to study after that. The work of judge seemed interesting to them, but also exhausting.

The pupil of secondary school of Dobele Sabine Surgunova thought about work of journalist some time ago, so in one of the Days of Shadows she was the “shadow” of some editor. She understood that it was not a profession of her dream. The next choice might be the profession of jurist, to be concrete – of prosecutor. So this time in the Day of shadows she decided to become a “shadow” of the assistant of the judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases Madara Matisa. Sabina admitted that everything she had seen and heard strengthened her plans about studies in the field of law. The work in the court seemed very interesting, but also frightening because of its seriousness and in some kind uniformity. She understood it is necessary to study hard in order to work in the court, to spend a lot of time working with the computer and at the table, how precisely it is necessary to work. She was surprised about how different and “narrow-minded small” problems have been reviewed in the Supreme Court. “Your work should be evaluated”, Sabina said.

“Day of shadows” is an event of career and education of pupils that is popular all over the world. In Latvia it has been organised by organisation Junior Achievement - Latvia. Main tasks are to broaden the scope of pupils and their understanding about knowledge and skills, necessary in their future occupation.
