On April 11, the Saeima (parliament) confirmed Veronika Krūmiņa, a Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate (Supreme Court), as a judge of the Constitutional Court. All 88 members of the parliament who were present voted for this decision.

The decision enters into force on August 19.

Veronika Krūmiņa has been a senator in the Department of Administrative Cases since 2005, and since 2007 – the Chair of the Department. Prior to senator’s office, she was a judge in a court of general jurisdiction, and also worked in the public administration.

Veronika Krūmiņa was nominated to the position of a judge of the Constitutional Court by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. Her candidacy was recognized as suitable by the Judicial Council.

There are seven judges in the Constitutional Court, and according to the Constitutional Court Law, the judges are approved by the Saeima. Three judges of the Constitutional Court are approved upon the proposal of no less than ten members of the Saeima, two judges – upon the proposal of the Cabinet of Ministers, and two more – upon the proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court.

The term of office of a judge of the Constitutional Court is ten years.
