On November 21, at the plenary meeting of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, by secret ballot, Senator of the Senate’s Department of Civil Cases, Professor of the University of Latvia, Doctor of Law Sanita Osipova was elected as a full member of the Academy of Sciences.
In total, at the plenary meeting 12 full members, 5 foreign members and one honorary member, as well as 5 corresponding members were elected as new members of the Academy of Sciences.
Professor Sanita Osipova's field of scientific research is a state governed by the rule of law, its models, criteria and implementation. She has studied the concept of the state governed by the rule of law from various aspects – history, sociology, constitutional law, and ethics.
“The concept of the state governed by rule of law is very complex. These are both scientific studies and practical applications,” Sanita Osipova marked, presenting her research at a meeting of the Senate of the Academy of Sciences. Some of the research findings have reached the Saeima (parliament) and helped, for example, to reform the judicial system. They are also referred to in court rulings. “Legal science is applicable in practice, and it can change and organize the lives of each of us,” Sanita Osipova pointed out.
The professor has written 173 publications, 85 of which are scientific and anonymously reviewed. She has written 35 articles in the National Encyclopaedia, 8 monographs – textbooks. She was awarded the Arveds Švābe Prize in history of Latvia of the Latvian Academy of Sciences for the collection of articles “Nation, Language, Rule-of-Law State: Towards Tomorrow”. Her latest remarkable work is the book “Public Law. Introduction” in the scientific editing of Ineta Ziemele and Sanita Osipova.
Outstanding Latvian scientists whose research is widely recognized in Latvia and the world are elected as full members of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS). The statutes of the LAS stipulate that there should be no more than 100 full members under the age of 70. When an academician exceeds the age of 70, a vacancy is opened for the election of a new full member, however, even after reaching the age of 70, the academician retains the status of a full member of the LAS and voting rights.
