On 20 January, Baiba Braže, Minister of Foreign Affairs, convened the first meeting of the new Council of Independent Experts on International and European Law. Viktorija Soņeca, Legal research counsel of the Senate’s Department of Civil Cases, has been invited to take part in the Council as an expert on European Union law.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and the experts discussed international and European law issues in the context of Latvia's long-term foreign policy objectives and geopolitical developments.

The experts serve in the Council on a voluntary and unpaid basis.

The Council was established to ensure in-depth research of the international legal framework on topical issues, the formulation of the country's foreign policy position and foreign policy decision-making on specific issues based on qualitative analysis of legal and political aspects, as well as the strengthening and development of the analysis of the international legal system in Latvia.
