PRESIDENT OF THE STATE: CONFIDENCE IN PROFESSIONAL AND FAIR JUDICIAL SYSTEM OF LATVIA MUST BE STRENGTHENED
3 March, 2017
In order to strengthen confidence in a professional, fair and trustworthy court, the judges of the Supreme Court should take part in developing the judicial system of Latvia and participate in political discussions related to judiciary. The issue was stressed by the President of the State Raimonds Vejonis in his greeting to participants of the Plenary Session of 3 March.
Rulings of the cassation court are final and cannot be appealed; therefore, as was indicated by the President, the responsibility when giving court rulings is particularly high. The society expects forward-looking rulings of the Supreme Court that contribute to development of judicial system of Latvia, thus strengthening the rule of law and values specified in the Constitution of Latvia.
"Evaluation of judicial system of Latvia in the eyes of society, entrepreneurs, and foreign investors depends on your work and integrity – whether legislation of Latvia is clear and predictable, whether courts make fair judgments and whether there truly is one law, one justice for all is what matters," said the President in his greeting.
