7 October, 2024
On October 4, a conference organised by the Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union and the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court of Greece was held in Athens, with the participation of the Presidents of the Supreme Courts of the European Union, Albania, Iceland, Montenegro, Serbia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom. The Supreme Court of Latvia was represented at the conference by its President Aigars Strupišs.
The themes of this year's conference were "The influence of European law on the Supreme Courts" and "The Attractiveness of the Judiciary". The keynote address on the first topic was given by Christophe Soulard, First President of the French Cour de Cassation, who moderated the discussion and spoke on the ways in which the Supreme Courts have assimilated European Union law and how European Union law has impacted the working methods of the Supreme Courts.
The discussion on the attractiveness of the judiciary included presentations by Petr Angyalossy, President of the Supreme Court of the Czech Republic, Danguolė Bublienė, President of the Supreme Court of Lithuania, and Miodrag Đorđević, President of the Supreme Court of Slovenia, thus examining the main factors that influence the attractiveness of a judge’s career, placing a particular focus on relevant issues such as remuneration, benefits, social security, special obligations, performance evaluation, selection.
The Network of the Presidents of the Supreme Judicial Courts of the European Union was established in 2004. It aims to promote the exchange of views and experience on the development and application of case-law, on the organisation and functions of the Supreme Courts work and on other issues and challenges of common interest to Supreme Courts.
