On August 15, the Supreme Court was visited by lawyers from Germany who are currently undergoing traineeship in the courts of the Baden-Württemberg region and has arrived to Latvia for an experience exchange visit as part of their study program.
At the Supreme Court, the guests were welcomed by Reinis Odiņš, the legal research counsel to the Department of Civil Cases. During the meeting, Reinis Odiņš spoke about the structure of the judicial system of Latvia, providing more detailed information about the Supreme Court, its activities, the work and duties of Senate’s Departments and the Supreme Court Administration, also focusing on the structure of the senators' support personnel. The guests were introduced to the Courts Information System, the availability of court rulings on the internet and the possibilities of searching and applying the Senate's case-law findings.
Foreign colleagues were particularly interested in procedures for obtaining a lawyer's qualification, the career development path of a judge in Latvia, as well as the education, knowledge and experience needed to become a judge at every court level. Issues such as the impact of historical case-law on examination of civil cases and the development of commercial law in Latvia were also discussed.
At the conclusion of the visit, the guests walked the corridors of the Palace of Justice and visited the Supreme Court Museum, gaining an insight into the history of the Supreme Court.
