6 September, 2024
On 6 September, an annual meeting of judges of the Supreme Courts of the Baltic States takes place in Vilnius. The meetings of the Supreme Courts of the Baltic States are a long-lived tradition that provides an opportunity for judges to share best practices, thus deepening and strengthening trilateral cooperation.
The Supreme Court of Latvia is represented by the President Aigars Strupišs, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases Normunds Salenieks, the Acting Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases Anita Kovaļevska and the Senator of the Department of Criminal Cases Irīna Jansone.
This year's conversations shall focus on best practices and solutions in two areas: the handling of cassation complaints, and the impartiality of judges. As to the handling of cassation complaints, the judges discussed the processes of handling of cassation complaints at court, the persons involved, the formal requirements for the preparation of cassation complaints, the grounds for refusing a cassation complaint and other related issues.
Within the context of the principle of judicial impartiality, the judges discussed the recent case-law on the interpretation and application of a breach of the principle of judicial impartiality as a ground for nullifying a judgment, as well as the understanding and prevention of conflicts of interest in judicial proceedings.
