On June 27, judges and prosecutors from several European Union countries (Germany, Romania, Poland, Italy, Bulgaria, Estonia) visited the Supreme Court as part of the annual experience exchange visit. The participants of the exchange program were welcomed by Anita Zikmane, Head of the Division of Case-law and Research of the Supreme Court.

Anita Zikmane introduced the guests to the structure of the Latvian judicial system and the role of the Senate (Supreme Court) in it. Moreover, general performance indicators and processes in the Senate were explained in detail, as well as the availability of court rulings and the role of case law in the Latvian legal system was clarified. In conclusion of the meeting, various communication activities and research projects on issues of importance to the society were noted.

The visitors had a tour in the building of the Palace of Justice, getting an insight into the history of the court in the Supreme Court Museum.

The international exchange visit of judges and prosecutors is organized by the Latvian Judicial Training Centre within the framework of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN) project. The project aims to promote the mutual recognition of legal practices by strengthening the single European legal area. Visits to the Constitutional Court, Court Administration, State Police and to other institutions are also on this year’s agenda.
