29 May, 2025
On 29 May, in a professional and friendly atmosphere, a book of significance to lawyers was launched in the Small Hall of the University of Latvia – the scientific monograph “Juridisko metožu mācība. Astoņi soļi tiesību normu piemērošanā” (Teaching of legal methods. Eight steps in the application of legal norms).
The monograph was written by Professor Dr. iur. Daiga Rezevska together with her former doctoral students, whose doctoral theses she supervised – Associate Professor and Supreme Court Senator Dr. iur. Jānis Pleps, lecturers and sworn attorneys Dr. iur. Gints Krūklis, Dr. iur. Māris Onževs, sworn advocate Dr. iur. Gundega Miķelsone and lecturer Kalvis Engīzers.
The monograph sequentially examines eight steps in the application of legal norms – from establishing facts of a case to adopting a reasoned and fair decision: clarification of the facts, search for applicable legal norms, verification of legal norms, clarification of the content of legal norms, resolution of the conflict of laws, further development of law, subsumption and drafting of a decision. Each of these steps is covered in a separate chapter, which explains the relevant legal methods, the underlying theoretical approaches, and analyzes practical examples from both Latvian and foreign case-law.
