The Supreme Court is a natural and reliable dialogue partner to the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), therefore it is important not only to strengthen this dialogue in the daily work of courts, but also to communicate about it to the public as highlighted by Ineta Ziemele, Judge at the CJEU, during the visit of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) delegation to the Supreme Court of Latvia.

Whereas, Aigars Strupišs, President of the Supreme Court of Latvia, pointed out that the joint work of the courts in strengthening the rule of law in Europe means not only a meeting or a dialogue regarding the preliminary ruling procedure. "We work with European Union law on a daily basis. We see the importance of EU law in deciding cases. This makes our vision of forms and models of cooperation somewhat pragmatic, namely we look at this aspect from a practical point of view," said the President of the Supreme Court.

The visit of the CJEU delegation to the Supreme Court on February 9 was also aimed at exchanging information between judges and discussing closer cooperation between courts as institutions.

Ineta Ziemele, Judge at the CJEU, and Inga Reine, Judge at the General Court, discussed the current case law of the CJEU with the senators of the Supreme Court. There was an essential insight into case law regarding actual beneficiaries and the protection of personal data, about the principle of access to the court (the right to participate in the examination of the case) and exceptions from this principle, as well as regarding other topical issues.

Whereas, Alfredo Calot Escobar, Registrar of the Court of Justice, Thierry Lefèvre, Director General for Multilingualism, Raluca-Lavinia Peica, Director General for Information, Celestina Iannone, Director of the Directorate of Research and Documentation, and Juan Carlos Gonzalez Alvarez, Head of the Press and Information Unit of the Communication Directorate, met with Sandra Lapiņa, Head of the Administration of the Supreme Court, Anita Zikmane, Head of the Division of Case-law and Research, and Rasma Zvejniece, Head of the Communication Division. Participants discussed judicial cooperation in issues of research and documentation in order to create effective tools and content necessary for judges' dialogue, as well as to exchange information on communication issues, also creating a joint dialogue with society in Latvia.

The visit of the CJEU delegation to the Supreme Court took place within the framework of the CJEU's high-level visit to Riga. On February 8-10, the CJEU delegation met with the President of Latvia, the Saeima (parliament), the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Education and Science, and also visited the European Union House, the Latvian National Library. Today at 12.00 the press conference for Latvian media representatives takes place, accessible here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JD_E11_bO2I
