Administrative judges of the Supreme Court of Ukraine visit the Supreme Court of Latvia for experience exchange

On Wednesday, September 20, the Supreme Court of Latvia was visited by the administrative judges of the Supreme Court of Ukraine – Myroslava Bilak and Natalia Kovalenko, as well as the Court’s interpreter Artem Nikolaienko. The guests visited the Supreme Court to learn about Latvia's experience in examining administrative cases at the cassation instance and in solving various procedural issues in its daily work.
At the Supreme Court, the delegation met with Veronika Krūmiņa, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases, and Jānis Pleps, the Senator of the Department of Administrative Cases, who introduced the Ukrainian colleagues with the operation of the Supreme Court and specifically with the work of the Department of Administrative Cases. Judges were particularly interested in topics such as cassation filters, pilot cases that facilitate the examination of administrative cases, as well as the Supreme Court's dialogue with lower courts. Latvian judges explained the peculiarities of case review and work organization in the Department of Administrative Cases, as well as provided an insight into the Department's experience regarding the application of international and European Union law and the cooperation with the Court of Justice of the European Union.
During the visit, the Ukrainian colleagues also had an insight into the cooperation of the Supreme Court with schools, as today the first law lesson of this study year was held for the 9th grade students of the Riga Secondary School No 69, which was conducted by Veronika Krūmiņa, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases.
The guests went on a guided tour in the Palace of Justice and learnt about the history of the Supreme Court in its museum.
Tomorrow, the Ukrainian delegation will take part in the international conference "The Role of the Judiciary in Execution of Judgments of the European Court of Human Rights ", co-organized by the Constitutional Court of Latvia and the Supreme Court of Latvia.
