Three candidates have been nominated for the post of President of the Supreme Court – the current President of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupišs, Senator Rudīte Vīduša of the Senate’s Department of Administrative Cases and Senator Aldis Laviņš of the Senate’s Department of Civil Cases.

Aigars Strupišs has been nominated by the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases Normunds Salenieks and the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases Anita Poļakova, Rudīte Vīduša was nominated by a majority of the senators of the Department of Administrative Cases, while Senator Aldis Laviņš nominated himself.

Information on the nominations received will be forwarded to the Judicial Council for opinion-giving. The senators will then decide at the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court on 14 April which nominee to submit to the Saeima (parliament) for confirmation in the office.

According to Section 50 of the law “On Judicial Power”, the work of the Supreme Court is managed by the President of the Supreme Court, who is appointed by the Saeima from among the senators of the Supreme Court for a term of five years upon the proposal of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. The same person may not serve as President of the Supreme Court for more than two consecutive terms.

The first term of office of the President of the Supreme Court, Aigars Strupišs, expires on 15 June.
