On Friday, the 16th of March, the Plenary Session or general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court will come together to assess work carried out in 2011 and to elect representatives of judges in several institutions of judicial self-government and in the Central Election Commission.
Heads of structural units of the Supreme Court, namely, Zigmants Gencs, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate, Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, Gunars Aigars, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases, Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, Pavels Gruzins, the Head of the Division of Case-law and Sandra Lapina, the Head of the Administration will present their reports on work of units in 2011. Summary on work of the Supreme Court and tasks for 2012 will be presented by Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

Agenda of the Plenary Session also includes several elections.
As Peteris Dzalbe, previous Chair of the Disciplinary Court, vice-Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate was elected for the post of the Chair of Judicial Disciplinary Committee, new member of the Disciplinary Court and the Chair of the Disciplinary Court are to be elected in the Plenary Session. The Disciplinary Court has been convened in the Senate of the Supreme Court to assess rule of law of negative decisions of the Judicial Disciplinary Committee and negative statements given by the Judicial Qualifications Committee. The Disciplinary Court consists of six senators elected by the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court, by twos from each department.
At the Plenary Session, judges will have to elect the secretary of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court as well, as term of office of Inara Garda elected as the secretary of the Plenary Session in 2009, has expired. Pursuant to regulations of the Plenary Session, the secretary of the Plenary Session is a judge elected among judges of the Supreme Court for three years.
There is another election more – member to the Central Election Commission is to be re-elected at the Plenary Session. The Central Election Commission consists of nine members. The Chair and seven members of the Commission are elected by the Saeima, and one member is elected among judges at the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. Pursuant to the law “On Central Election Commission”, regular election of the Central Election Commissionmust take place not later than in six months after reunion of the new Saeima. Previously, Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate was the member of the Central Election Commission elected among judges.
The Plenary Session will start at 9.30 o’clock in room 146 of the Supreme Court. Plenary Sessions are public, and representatives of media are kindly invited to attend general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court.
After the Plenary Session, at 15.15 o’clock, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, and heads of structural units invite journalists to a press conference on assessment of work of the Supreme Court last year.
