The Saeima today, on the 12th of May, decided to award Pavels Gruzins, the ex-Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate, presently the Head of the Division of case-law, with the title of the Honoured Judge.

The Saeima gave the title of the Honoured Judge pursuant to proposal of the Council of Justice.

This has been the second title of the Honoured Judge given to the judge of the Supreme Court. Aiva Zarina, the ex-judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases, was the first to receive it in March, 2011. At present, there are six Honoured Judges in Latvia.

Pursuant to the law “On Judicial Power”, title of the Honorary Judge may be given to a judge who had worked in good faith and who has terminated execution of his/her duties. It is honorary title, but the law provides that the Honoured Judge of the Supreme Court may replace the judge of the Senate or the Chamber of the Supreme Court in case of vacancy or temporary absence.
