General Assembly of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary made a decision about admittance of the Board of Justice of the Republic of Latvia as a member of network. Decision was made at the Assembly that took place in Vilnius on June 8-10.

Before that Latvia had status of observer in the ENCJ, and our country was represented by the Minister of Justice. In 2010 the Board of Justice was created in Latvia, and it can implement its representation directly.

ENCJ is a nonprofit organization that consolidates institutions independent from legislative and executive power, representing judiciary of member-states of the European Union. Association was founded in 2004 to promote cooperation, experience exchange and general analysis of information among Boards of Justice of the EU member-states. It is also an opportunity to submit joint information and recommendations to the EU institutions.

Members of ENCJ are Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Great Britain, France, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Scotland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain, and now – also Latvia.

General Assembly of the Association takes place at least once a year. Declaration “Challenges and opportunities of judiciary in present economic situation” adopted in Vilnius appeals to develop long-term policy of court system and implement reforms to make court work more effective and to create closer linkage with society.
