Latvian Judicial Conference on September 3, elected the composition of Judicial Qualifications Committee for the next four years. The management of the committee has been reassigned to the deputy of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases Gunars Aigars.

In composition of Qualifications Committee there were elected:

Representatives of the Supreme Court: the senator of the Department of Civil Cases Anda Vitola, the senator of the Department of Criminal Cases Voldemars Cizevskis, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases Gunars Aigars, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases Inguna Radzevica;

Representatives of regional courts: from Judicial Panels of Civil Cases – the judge of Latgales regional court Anna Biksiniece, from Judicial Panels of Criminal Cases the Chair of Kurzemes regional court Silva Reinholde, from Administrativeregional court – the Chair of the court Zita Kupce;

Representatives of district courts: the Chair of the court of Tukuma district Brigita Baltraite, the Chair of the court of Saldus district Gunita Galina;

Representatives of Departments of Land books: the judge of the Department of Land book of Riga city Ilga Neimane, the Head of the Department of Land book of Riga city Inara Zarina.

The Chair of the Judicial Qualifications Committee Gunars Aigars, while reporting upon the work of the Committee during previous term of office, informed that during four years Judicial Qualifications Committee has reviewed cases of 724 judges. 108 qualification classes were given; in four cases attribution of qualification class was rejected.

The Judicial Qualifications Committee is an institution of judicial self-government, which task is to strengthen professional independence of judges. The Judicial Qualifications Committee evaluates professionalism of the candidate for the post of judge, implementing a qualification examination, gives a conclusion about candidature of the judge of district (city) court, regional court or the Supreme Court, certifies judges and makes decisions upon attribution or lowering of the qualification class.
