On Friday, January 26, the conference "The Impact of Public Opinion on Judges and the Judicial System in General", organized by the Research Institute of Legal Sciences and the Law Faculty of the University of Latvia, will be held at the University of Latvia. The purpose of the event is to discuss the impact of the public opinion created by media on the progress and outcome of court proceedings that raise public interest.

"The public impact on the judicial environment is a topic that over the years has become particularly relevant regarding significant proceedings. Public pressure on the investigation, adjudication, and appeal of various commercial law cases and serious crimes is often so strong that all the parties to the proceedings feel it. I hope that topicalization of the issue and discussions among journalists, judges and advocates will raise awareness of this phenomenon, which in turn will improve the communication of the judicial system with the society," explains Ringolds Balodis, Chair of the Board of the Research Institute of Legal Sciences, professor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia.

Veronika Krumina, Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court, will present a report "Judge in the Space of Legal Culture". In turn, Aigars Strupiss, Judge of the Department of Civil Cases will take part in the panel discussion "The effect of pressure from the media and the society on ensuring a fair trial".

The conference is supported by the Faculty of Law of the University of Latvia, the Supreme Court and the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates.
