Statistical data summarised shows that in 2011, there were 7908 cases in proceedings in the Supreme Court, and it was for 468 cases more than in 2010. 4844 cases were reviewed, and number of cases pending was 3064.
In total, 4986 cases were received in the Supreme Court in 2011. 3013 cases were received in cassation instance – in the Senate, and 1973 cases were received in court chambers.
45 percent of cases received in the Senate are civil cases, 24 per cent are criminal cases and 31 per cent are administrative cases. Number of cases received in the Department of Civil Cases and the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate has decreased a little, but number of cases received in the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate has increased for 10 per cent.
In its turn, 87 per cent of cases received in court chambers are civil cases, and 13 per cent are criminal cases. Number of cases received in the Chamber of Civil Cases, in comparison with 2010, has increased for 5 per cent, but number of cases received in the Chamber of Criminal Cases has decreased for 24 per cent.
In 2011, the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate reviewed 1031 cases or 46 per cent of all cases falling under its jurisdiction, the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate reviewed 725 cases, which make 93 per cent of all cases falling under its jurisdiction, and the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate reviewed 963 cases or 78 per cent of total number of cases falling under its jurisdiction.
Number of cases pending, in comparison with 2010, has decreased in the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate; number of cases pending in the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate has remained at the level of previous year, but number of cases pending in the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate has increased for 37 per cent and there were 1202 cases at the end of the year.
2085 cases were reviewed in appellate instance, namely, in court chambers in 2011. The Chamber of Civil Cases reviewed 60 percent of cases of cases that were under proceedings – 1827 cases, and that is for 313 cases more than previous year. The Chamber of Criminal Cases reviewed 48 percent of cases of cases that were under proceedings – 298 cases, which is for 15 cases less than previous year.
Number of cases pending in the Chamber of Civil Cases, in comparison with 2010, has decreased for 8 per cent, and 1214 were pending at the end of the year. In the Chamber of Criminal Cases, 326 cases were pending at the end of the year, and, in comparison with previous year, it had decreased for 13 per cent.
The Plenary Session or general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court will take place on the 16th of March to analyse results and problems of work in 2011. Heads of structural units of the Supreme Court, namely, Zigmants Gencs, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases of the Senate, Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, Gunars Aigars, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases, Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases, Pavels Gruzins, the Head of the Division of Case-law and Sandra Lapina, the Head of the Administration will present their reports on work of each unit in 2011. Summary on work of the Supreme Court and tasks for 2012 will be presented by Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
