THE SAEIMA REJECTS THE PROPOSAL ON TRANSFER OF FORMER JUDGES OF THE CHAMBER OF CRIMINAL CASES TO WORK TO RIGA REGIONAL COURT
29 January, 2015
In the sitting of 29 January, the Saeima (Parliament) rejected the proposal on transfer of Ludmila Polakova, Janis Tiltins and Ervins Kuskis, who are former judges of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, to work to Riga regional court.
Due to reform of court system and liquidation of appellate instance of the Supreme Court, namely, the Chamber of Criminal Cases, on 31 December 2014, it was necessary to solve issue related to further career of five judges of the Chamber. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court promoted all five judges to four vacancies in cassation instance – in the Department of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, but the general meeting of judges of the department in its turn decided that only two of these judges will continue work as judges of the department. Thus, question about the rest three judges remained topical.
In order to solve this issue, the Council for the Judiciary in accordance with procedure stated in the law “On Judicial Power” urged to transfer three judges of the Supreme Court to work to Riga regional court. By decision of 29 January, the Saeima rejected this version of solution.
