The Judicial Council has awarded the title of Judge Emeritus to the former senator of the Supreme Court Edite Vernusa, whose judicial office terminated on April 30, 2020.

Edite Vernusa has been a judge for 30 years. She has been a judge of Riga City Centre District Court, Riga Regional Court, and a judge of the Supreme Court for 21 years – a judge of the Chamber of Civil Cases, a senator of the Department of Administrative Cases of the Senate, a senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate since 2005.

The proposal to grant the title of Judge Emeritus was submitted by the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate, recognizing Edite Vernusa as a high-ranking professional – a judge and a leader. Former colleagues point out that as the chair of the Department, Edite Vernusa knew how to create a work organization system in the Department, which was focused on the main point – high-quality and fast handling of cases and reduction of backlog of cases, as well as motivating the senators and employees to perform their duties in a professional and responsible way. She gained authority and respect with her honesty, sense of responsibility, great work capacity, ability to create a positive atmosphere in the team, comprehensive intelligence and selfless sharing of knowledge and experience. For her significant contribution to the development of the judiciary and for many years of selfless work she has received the Order of the Three Stars, the Badge of Honour of the Justice System and twice the Themis Award of the Supreme Court.

The members of the Judicial Council unanimously supported the proposal of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate. The judge of Riga Regional Court Ilze Celmina noted that Edite Vernusa has set a high standard of how a judge should work, she was not afraid to go to judges of lower courts and talk about real matters. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupiss described Edite Vernusa as one of the brightest personalities in the Senate, a pronounced authority among colleagues, under whose leadership the adjudication of cases in the Department was furthered. She is considered an authority in inheritance matters. Laila Medina, Deputy State Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, noted Edite Vernusa's contribution to the working group of the Civil Procedure Law, her opinion was also significant in the discussions in the Parliament. Guna Kaminska, Deputy-Chair of the Association of Sworn Advocates, expressed her gratitude for Edite Vernusa’s contribution to the education of advocates, having served in the Sworn Advocates Examination Commission for many years.

The title of Judge Emeritus may be awarded by the Judicial Council to a judge who has acted in good faith and terminated the activity of a judge. Edite Vernusa is the sixteenth Latvian judge to be awarded this title.
