CANDIDATE TO THE OFFICE OF A JUDGE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT WILL BE NOMINATED AND PERFORMANCE OF LAST YEAR WILL BE ASSESSED AT THE PLENARY SESSION OF THE SUPREME COURT

On Friday, February 21, the Plenary Session or general meeting of judges of the Supreme Court will assess performance of the Supreme Court in 2013, nominate candidate to the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court and elect the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases.
The Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will decide on recommending of a judge for confirmation in the office of a judge of the Constitutional Court. All Latvian judges were asked to apply to it, and two judges expressed their readiness to stand for the position, namely, Ludmila Polakova, the judge of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, and Aldis Lavins, the judge of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court.
Vacant judicial office appeared in the Constitutional Court due to expiration of term of office of Aija Branta, the judge of the Constitutional Court, on March, 24. She was confirmed by the Saeima (the Parliament) in this position 10 years ago upon recommendation of the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court. In accordance with the Constitutional Court Law, the Saeima confirms other judge upon recommendation of the same institution, which had nominated candidacy of a previous judge.
Agenda of the Plenary Session also includes elections of the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases of the Supreme Court, as five-year term of office of Ervins Kuskis in the position of the Chair of the Chamber expires. Next term of office of the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases will be less than one year, as in accordance with amendments to the law “On Judicial Power” and reorganisation of the Supreme Court the Chamber of Criminal Cases exists within structure of the Supreme Court until December 31, 2014.
The biggest part of the agenda of the Plenary Session will be dedicated to assessment of performance of the Supreme Court last year. Work of structural units will be analysed by Heads of those – Zigmants Gencs, the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases; Peteris Dzalbe, the Chair of the Department of Criminal Cases; Veronika Krumina, the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases; Gunars Aigars, the Chair of the Chamber of Civil Cases; Ervins Kuskis, the Chair of the Chamber of Criminal Cases; Pavels Gruzins, the Head of the Division of Case-law and Sandra Lapina, the Head of the Administration. Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will provide summary of performance of the Supreme Court in 2013 and further tasks. Eriks Kalnmeiers, the Prosecutor General, and Baiba Broka, the Minister of Justice, are also invited to participate in the Plenary Session.
The Plenary Session of the Supreme Court will begin at 9.30 o’clock in Room 146 of the Supreme Court.
