THEMIS AWARDS 2016 OF THE SUPREME COURT ARE GIVEN

December 29, Themis Award winners 2016 were announced in the Supreme Court. Professional Themis Award was given to Janis Neimanis, Judge of the Department of Administrative Cases, Creative Themis Award – to Rihards Gulbis, Scientific adviser to the Department of Civil Cases, and Special Themis Award – to the Chamber of Civil Cases.

SAEIMA CONFIRMS JANIS NEIMANIS A JUDGE OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

Thursday, 22 December, Saeima (Parliament) confirmed Janis Neimanis as judge of the Constitutional Court. He will replace the judge Uldis Kinis as his term of office expires.

JUDGE EMERITUS OF THE SUPREME COURT ROLANDS KRAUZE PASSED AWAY

The Supreme Court has received sad news. Former Senator of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court and Judge Emeritus of the Supreme Court Rolands Krauze has passed away. He died on November 6, at the age of 86.

MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS VISITED THE SUPREME COURT DURING FRESHMAN DAYS

21 December, the Supreme Court was visited by last this year’s group of students from the University of Latvia. They learned about the judicial system and work of the Supreme Court. During freshman days starting from October, The Supreme Court was attended by 13 groups of students, a total of 220 students from the University of Latvia, Riga Stradins University, Daugavpils University, School of Business Administration "Turiba", Rezekne Academy of Technology and the College of Law. It is significant that freshman days began in 21 October also with a group of students from the University of Latvia.

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS NEED FOR UNIFORM PRACTICE IN ANONYMIZATION OF COURT RULINGS

The conference "Limits of Transparent Justice" organized by the Supreme Court of Slovakia within the framework of Slovak Republic Presidency of the European Union took place in the beginning of December. It was concluded that there was no uniform practice on publishing the judicial decisions; each country publishes them with regard to their "culture and understanding".

Thursday, 15 December, seven attorneys admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Attorneys gave an oath to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics.

BOOK ON HISTORY OF THE CHAMBER OF CIVIL CASES

In order to keep the testimony of 21 years long history, during which the Chambers of the Supreme Court operated as an appellate court, the Supreme Court has issued a brochure "The Chamber of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia 1995-2016". It is a sequel to the brochure issued two years ago about the Chamber of Criminal Cases. These two publications is a story about an important stage in the history of the Supreme Court and the whole judicial system of the Republic of Latvia.

An exhibition is created in order to conclude the operation of the Chambers of The Supreme Court. It tells the story of the activities of appellate instance since its establishment in 1995 to the termination of work of the Chamber of Criminal Cases in 2014 and the Chamber of Civil Cases on 31 December 2016.

THE DIVISION OF CASE-LAW AND RESEARCH GAINS EXPERIENCE IN RESEARCH WORK IN THE NETHERLANDS

In order to gain insight into research work of international and Dutch institutions, that is to say, to learn how comparative law research is done and organized and to find out the information on foreign case-law, the employees of the Division of Case-law and Research of the Supreme Court in early December in framework of experience exchange visited the Supreme Court and the research institutions in the Hague and Amsterdam.
