Council for the Judiciary supports territorial reform of courts

The Council for the Judiciary supported the project for reorganization of district (city) courts in the courts districts of Riga, Kurzeme, Vidzeme and Zemgale. Project is prepared by the Ministry of Justice, according to which the territorial reform of courts in Latvia will be completed in 2018.

Judicial positions are transferred from regions to Riga

In order to equalize the judges' workload and reduce the volume of pending cases in the first instance, Council for the Judiciary decided by 1 July 2017 to transfer one judicial position from Aizkraukle District Court to Riga City Latgale District Court, one position – from Aluksne District Court to Riga City Vidzeme District Court, one position – from Daugavpils Court to Riga District Court and from October 1 – one judicial position shall be transferred from Rezekne Court to Riga City Vidzeme District Court.

Support for extending the area of authority of the Council for the Judiciary

The Council for the Judiciary evaluated and expressed its view on the amendments to the Law "On Judicial Power" submitted to the Saeima (Parliament) before the second reading. The Council for the Judiciary supported the majority of proposals stated in the draft law.

On 7-9 June, Ivars Bickovics, Chair of the Council for the Judiciary, and Solvita Harbacevica, Head of the Secretariat of the Council for the Judiciary, participates in the General Assembly of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary, which this year takes place in Paris and the topic of which is “Resilient Justice”.

On Tuesday, June 6, within the framework of experience exchange visit organized by the Judicial Training Centre the Supreme Court was visited 16 participants from various European Union countries, including 9 judges of general jurisdiction, 2 administrative judges and 5 prosecutors.
