On 21 April, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia organized an International conference. During the conference the role of Divisions of Research of the Supreme Courts were discussed, as well as the cooperation of Courts with higher education institutions. The discussion was led by the Director of Center of Continuing Legal Education and Professional Development of the University of Latvia, Prof. Dr. iur. Kristine Strada-Rozenberga
During the conference of 21 April "Supreme Courts as guarantee for effectiveness of judicial systems in the European Union" organized by the Supreme Court of Latvia, Dr.iur. Aivars Endzins, Chair of the Commission for Legal Environment created by the President of Latvia, spoke about possibilities to improve the authority of the Council for the Judiciary of Latvia.
On April 21 during the conference organized by the Supreme Court of Latvia, the Chief Justices of Supreme Courts of all three Baltic States met.
On April 21 during the conference organized by the Supreme Court of Latvia there were opinions voiced and discussions about new challenges and modern technologies that are faced by all the Supreme Courts of the European Union at their daily work.
On 10 April 2017 the European Commission published the 2017 EU Justice Scoreboard. This is the fifth report, which analyzes the efficiency, quality and independence of judicial systems. Preparation of the report data required participation of 28 EU Member States; the report includes a number of quality indicators, as well as provides a deeper analysis of certain areas.
Monday, 3 April, the delegation of the Republic of Turkmenistan visited the Supreme Court of Latvia. Guests met with the Chair of the Department of Administrative Cases Veronika Krumina and judge’s assistant Natalja Purina. The colleagues from Turkmenistan were presented with administrative procedure and rights of Latvian judicial system.
Today, March 31, Judge of the Department of Administrative Cases Janis Neimanis for the period of 10 years ceases to exercise his duties at the Supreme Court, since he is being approved as judge of the Constitutional Court.
Tuesday, March 28, the Supreme Court was visited by experts from the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation of the US. The visit took place in the framework of cooperation project between governments of the US and Latvia in order to strengthen the judicial system of Latvia in relation to financial crime investigation.
On 27 and 28 March, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ivars Bickovics visits Luxembourg and participates in the meeting of the presidents of Supreme Courts which is organized by the European Court of Justice on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome.
On 21 March, the Department of Administrative Cases of the Supreme Court stayed the proceedings in the case in which the Administrative Regional Court rejected the application of the applicant for the annulment of the decision of State Revenue Service, imposing on the applicant additional value added tax obligations. Proceedings in the case are suspended until the coming into force of a preliminary ruling by the European Court of Justice.
