Conversation with new judges and judicial candidates about the challenges of a 21st century judge

In the 21st century, it is no longer enough for a judge to have merely a formal authority, a judge must gain an authority through his or her professional qualities and dialogue with the public, as was emphasised by the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Aigars Strupiss in conversation with new judges and candidates for the position of a judge.

Normunds Salenieks is elected the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases

Senator Normunds Salenieks was elected the Chair of the Department of Civil Cases of the Senate at the Plenary Session of the Supreme Court on September 11. According to the law “On Judicial Power”, the Chairs of the Departments of the Supreme Court are elected by the General Meeting of Judges for a term of five years.

Public survey: clearly defined laws are needed to strengthen the rule of law

While preparing for the discussion at the Conversation Festival LAMPA “Building the Rule of Law Together”, the Supreme Court organized a public survey on the issues of the rule of law. More than 1000 respondents from all over Latvia participated in the survey conducted by the research centre SKDS.

The rule of law must be strengthened by everyone within their area of responsibility – as agreed by senior officials of all branches of state power at the Conversation Festival LAMPA

“Latvia is a state governed by the rule of law – there is no doubt about that, but the rule of law must be strengthened, and everyone must do so within the area of their responsibility,” said State President Egils Levits concluding the discussion organized by the Supreme Court at the Conversation Festival LAMPA and giving 6 out of 10 points to the rule of law in Latvia.

The Supreme Court is launching the project "Application of e-solutions in the administration of court work and in the conduct of proceedings in Ukraine during the COVID-19 crisis". Discussion on the length of civil proceedings

In order to prepare a report to the Judicial Council on the possibilities of speeding up legal proceedings, a discussion on deadlines for hearing civil cases took place in the Supreme Court on 27 August. The discussion focused on the role of a judge in the conduct of the proceedings, the application of sanctions to the participants in the proceedings, the use of technology in courts, the improvement of expert opinions, the development of court support staff, and other issues.
