THE LATEST ISSUE OF “JURISTA VĀRDS” DEDICATED TO BALTIC GERMAN LEGAL SCHOLAR DIETRICH ANDRÉ LOEBER AND THE JUDGMENT OF THE SUPREME COURT REGARDING HIS SON’S CITIZENSHIP

The issue of the periodical “Jurista Vārds” (“Lawyer’s Word”) of July 24 is devoted to the distinguished Baltic German lawyer Professor Dietrich André Loeber (Dītrihs Andrejs Lēbers) (1923-2004), "whose efforts in maintaining the hope in Latvia's independence during the seemingly hopeless years of the Soviet occupation must in no way be forgotten" – the editor-in-chief commented on the theme of the issue.

STUDENTS OF SUMMER SCHOOL OF TURĪBA UNIVERSITY VISIT THE SUPREME COURT

On July 19, Anita Zikmane, Head of the Division of Case-law and Research, met with students from the Summer School of Turība University. Students were coming from Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Austria, the Czech Republic and Italy. Foreign students had arrived to Latvia for two weeks to take part in the intensive course about mediation. The students showed great interest in the Supreme Court of Latvia, as well as have already visited the Saeima (parliament).

WHAT SHOULD BE DONE SO THAT 80% OF POPULATION OF LATVIA WOULD HAVE CONFIDENCE IN THE JUDICIARY?

This was a question raised during one of the discussions of the conversation festival "Lampa" that took place in Cesis on June 30, in which also Aigars Strupiss and Anita Kovalevska, –judges of the Supreme Court, – took part. Judge Strupiss is also the Chair of the Disciplinary Court, but judge Kovalevska – chair of the Judicial Ethics Commission.

THE SUPREME COURT WELCOMES SPECIAL GUESTS FROM GERMANY

On Friday, June 22, Dr. P. Nikolai Ehlers, LL.M. and his brother Prof. Dr. Dr. Alexander P.F. Ehlers – Herbert Ehlers’ grandsons with families visited the Supreme Court. Herbert Ehlers was one of the most outstanding lawyers of the first period of the free state of Latvia. He is also one of the developers of the cornerstone of civil rights in Latvia – the Civil Law. He has later translated it also into German.

EXAMINATION OF LEGALITY OF RULINGS IN CRIMINAL CASES UNDER CASSATION PROCEDURE SHALL BE CARRIED OUT COLLECTIVELY; REFUSAL SHALL BE MOTIVATED

In accordance with the judgment of the Constitutional Court of 14 June 2018 in the case No 2017-23-01 "On the compliance of the second and third parts of Section 573 of the Criminal Procedure Law with the first sentence of Article 92 of the Satversme (Constitution) of the Republic of Latvia", an examination of the legality of rulings of the Department of Criminal Cases under the cassation procedure shall be carried out by the composition of three judges and the refusal to initiate cassation proceedings shall be motivated.

WORLD CONGRESS OF LATVIAN LAWYERS TOPICALIZES THE ROLE OF THE SUPREME COURT IN SOLVING THE ISSUES IN THE FIELD OF COMMERCIAL LAW

Professor Kalvis Torgans, who unveiled the discussion session “Legal framework for Business Activity: Problems and Solutions” of the 3rd World Congress of Latvian Lawyers, highlighted a number of issues in the field of commercial law that must be addressed in the centenary of the state. At the same time, he noted the positive aspects – progress in this area of ​​law. One of them is the formation of the case-law with the participation of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court.

AN OAK PLANTED BY THE SUPREME COURTS OF BALTIC STATES WILL FLOURISH IN HOME VILLAGE OF CAKSTE FAMILY

In the centenary of the Baltic States, the first president of Latvia Janis Cakste and his family is commemorated, as judges of the Supreme Courts of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania planted an oak in their memory on June 15, in their home village - “Auči” of Ozolnieki district.

CHIEF JUSTICES OF SUPREME COURTS OF THE BALTIC STATES DONATE BOOKS TO THE PEOPLE’S BOOKSHELF

In conclusion of the conference “Development Path of Judicial Systems of Baltic States”, each chief justice of the Supreme Courts of Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia presented a book containing special message to the People’s Bookshelf of the National Library of Latvia.

IN THE CENTENARY YEAR OF THE BALTIC STATES THE SUPREME COURTS MEET IN RIGA

On Thursday, June 14, the chief justices and judges of the three supreme courts of the Baltic States will meet in Riga to look at the the development of the judiciaries of all three Baltic States in the first hundred years of the countries in a joint conference.
