PETER WHELAN, PROFESSOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS, VISITS THE SUPREME COURT

On 23 March, Peter Whelan, Deputy Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Leeds, visited the Supreme Court. Professor specializes in both competition law and criminal law.

SUPREME COURT REJECTS ACCUSATIONS OF NON-OBSERVANCE OF THE JUDGMENT OF THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT

On 19 March, the judges of the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court discussed the views expressed in the public space regarding the non-observance of the judgment of the Constitutional Court of 8 March 2017 when examining the civil case No SKC-284/2017 (C04281907). In this case, the judgment was delivered on 28 December 2017. Judges of the Department of Civil Cases admitted that the critical opinion was expressed without taking into account the different factual and legal circumstances of cases examined by the Constitutional Court and the Department of Civil Cases of the Supreme Court. Consequently, accusations of non-observance of the judgment of the Constitutional Court shall be rejected as unfounded.

JUDGE EMERITUS KALVIS TORGANS RECEIVES THE GRAND MEDAL OF THE LATVIAN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES

Senate of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, after hearing the references about the candidates nominated by the Presidium of the Academy, decided to award the Grand Medal of the Latvian Academy of Sciences to academicians Vija Klusa and Kalvis Torgans.

HISTORIAN VALTERS SCERBINSKIS COMMENCES CONVERSATION SERIES ON LATVIA’S STATEHOOD

On 16 March, Valters Scerbinksis, PhD in History, the author of the biographical dictionaries of Latvian judges, advocates and notaries, was the first guest of the Supreme Court who opened conversation series on Latvia’s statehood. The historian talked about the history of Latvia's statehood.

THE CHIEF JUSTICE ACCEPTS AN OATH OF AN ADVOCATE

On 15 March, Ivars Bickovics, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, took the oath of Janis Kubilis, an advocate admitted to the Latvian Council of Sworn Advocates. Janis Kubilis has previously been an advocate’s assistant. He holds a doctoral degree in law.

GUEST LECTURE BY UNIVERSITY OF LEEDS PROFESSOR ON THE CRIMINAL ENFORCEMENT OF COMPETITION LAW

On March 23, at 10:00, Peter Whelan, Deputy Director of the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies, which is based in the School of Law, Professor at the University of Leeds specialized in competition law and criminal law, will give a guest lecture on the criminalization of violations of competition law at the Gold Hall of Riga Latvian Society.
